The Rotary Jaipur Limb UK camp at Quilon was inaugurated by Smt. J. Mercykutty Amm Minister for Fisheries, Harbour Engineering and Cashew Industry, Government of Kerala. She is a member of Quilon Constituency where the camp is being organised. The Rotary President of Rotary Quilon West End Rtn Chandran, Past District Governors K P Ramachandran , DRFC and PDG Dr George and many others from District attended the function. Rtn Chandran conducted the camp at his home itself which have huge parking area. Being the camp on the house premises, he and his family assisted each patient by providing free food and coffee whenever needed. The whole members of Rotary and their family joined Chandran’s family in looking after the patients. This is the first camp in our history which was held at a residential home. As of now we provided 152 artificial limbs.49 patients were fitted with above knee. The staff of Oli India made good quality in spite of the fact that over 49 limbs were above knee.
In olden days earlier limb manufacturing unit Mukti considered first 5 above knee as 1 and balance above knee as 2 while calculating number of limbs. That means as per that out of 49 above knee, first 5 above limb is considered as 1 each. Balance 44 above knee is considered as 88 limbs. As per that calculation, 103 below knee Plus 93=196 (first 5 above knee plus 44 above knee out of 49) It may be noted that for above knee is double the work when compared with below knee.
Whereas Oli India considered above knee and below knee as one. And we provided 152 limbs. The total number of above knee was 49.
God sent them to save my life
I met a beautifully dressed girl of 38 years old sitting in a chair watching us speaking during the limb camp but I suddenly I noted that she is using crutches. Soon after the meeting I rushed to them. With a smile Smith and Sunil welcomed me. Smith started taking. Sir we are coming from Kottayam which is close to your area and we travelled three hours to reach camp. Rotary president Chandran sir and his family welcomed us as if we are a member of his family. She started non-stop and I asked Smith about her family. Smith and Sunil, they have three children and all are students at school. Smitha is a heart patient. The blood vessel to her leg had a block and her legs were amputated.
Sunil her husband continued “Sir I work as a painter and for the treatment of my wife, we had to sell our property and now we live in a rented house. Is there any possibility of getting a home as we understand Rotary is providing homes for people who lost home in flooding?
I told them that Rotary provides homes only to people who lost home in flooding .But I asked the club that forwarded Smitha to the camp to assist this family.
I narrated them about Rotary Jaipur Limb UK and how Rotary clubs and Gift aid is helping us to provide artificial limbs. Smitha said “Sir I cannot find exact words to express thanks to them. God sent them to save my life. Last one month I used to light oil lamps in our temple and I used to pray to Lord to get my artificial limbs. My life was miserable. Sir now I can walk without anyone’s help. Sir mobility is most important.
Rotary does God’s own work. When Smitha received her limbs, I could see the smile on her face which expresses her gratitude to each of you, the supporters of Rotary Jaipur LIMB UK
